Paddling to New Zealand

Sunbaking after marathon swim

Good sunbathing position with head in the shade

Sunday is swimming-in-the-harbour day.  The city council built wide steps especially for dogs, straight down into the water so we don’t need to jump the wall and belly flop 10 metres into the sea.  At very low tide there is a bit of a beach but most of the time we launch ourselves off the bottom step, play fetch and attempt very bad synchronised swimming.

After a few rounds of jumping in and out and rolling on the grass I challenged everyone to a race and led a gang of six dogs into the water.  After a short distance they gave up, miles behind me – wimps.  Determined and focused on getting out to sea I kept paddling, ignoring the increasingly distant ‘come’ call.

Caught a strong waft of something smelly which made the swim into an adventure and spied a bloated dead fish.  Easy grab.  Then realised I was about 100 metres from the steps with onlookers wondering if I’d make it back.  Didn’t want to ditch the fish so struggled on valiantly, eager to roll in it back at the steps.

Fifteen minutes later after paddling, then treading water, then paddling again, finally beached myself, spreadeagled on the steps.  The encouraging ‘come ons’ at the end really helped.  Dropped the fish that had weighed me down.  Owner realised I couldn’t walk home so phoned for back up and was hoisted into the boot of our car, given a shower and fell asleep immediately in the sun.  Need to work on my endurance if I want to make it to New Zealand.

Ruby you must cover yourself in smelly/delish fat or lard like the English channel swimmers…not only pre stinky (losing the need to exert energy on a dead fish stink roll ) but will add to the warmth needed for endurance..forget trying to get to kiwi land and focus on back to shore for mum! rest up..doglympics awaits! 🙂

Thanks for the tips – the lard option sounds like a great plan and will bear it in mind for next Sunday…

Yes. Didn’t even make it out for an afternoon walk as I was so shattered!
