Losing my touch

Don't I smell nice?

Don’t I smell nice?

Most days I bump into Barney and Dougal, black and golden labradors respectively, Barney is ball crazy and runs in circles all the time, Dougal is overly affectionate to me (if you know what I mean) and has to be constantly dragged off my back. But today was different…

Raced up to Dougal, gave him a good lick and expected the inevitable but no, he completely ignored me and started eating grass. Did my best puppy dog bow and raced around and around the tree and kissed him again.  Not interested, so I sat down expectantly awaiting Dougal’s attentions but again, not tempted.

Felt quite rejected.  Owner explained that last week Dougal was the lucky recipient of a testosterone reducing injection so he’s off girls for the rest of the year.  Quite shocked at the change in him and tomorrow will do my best to be super attractive and see if that works.  Maybe a roll in dead bat beforehand might make me smell better.

Oh Ruby! That must have been quite a crushing blow to your ego!
Don’t worry you didn’t lose your touch. It was nothing personal after all!

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Jun 26 2013 1:55 pm

Yes it was, especially as I know about Leo traits now and need to boost my ego!

Oh rolling in dead bat will make you smell all right :p

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Jun 26 2013 2:38 pm

Well yes I think so. Either that or dead ibis, dead possum or dead rat. Think bat has the best perfume and hardest smell to get rid of.

aww, ruby! you didn’t lose touch, sweetie. it’s your good pal dougal who lost something! :p he’ll come around and play with you again, you’ll see. 🙂

Thanks for the support. I do hope so. Maybe we can be ‘just friends’…

I didn’t know that a shot existed. I thought the only solution was surgery.

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Jun 26 2013 7:43 pm

Yes apparently new to Australia and it takes ages here to get drugs approved for humans let alone dogs. Dougal is obviously intact but vv dominant and is very ‘friendly’ to all dogs, male and female. Supposed to take 3 months to kick in, then all ok for 6 months, then it starts to wear off during the final 3 months of the year. happy to find out more specifics if you’re interested. His behaviour change kicked in almost within one week.

Interesting. Is there something out there for females too? At this time we only have neutered males (the surgical way), but who knows about the future? It would be interesting to know how it effects their overall long term health. Such as prostate health.

        Thanks for the information.

Nothing for females at this stage – they have to go through the whole op and 4-6 week recovery. will keep you posted if I find out more 🙂

More information for you: The drug is called suprelorin and is actually an implant (not injection) administered in the same way as a microchip (which is compulsory in Australia). Looks like it’s definitely available in Australia and the UK, not sure about the US. As usual google has the answer…

Thank you for the update. It sounds interesting. I’ll check it out too.

Oh Ruby..shattered! poor boy had a man-ectomy ..I suggest a dab of bat behind each ear just to show him you care 🙂 🙂 xx

  6. Sonel / Jun 26 2013 8:58 pm

Awwww shame, poor Dougal. Well, don’t worry about it Ruby. It had nothing to do with you, so keep that loving and sexy attitude sweetie. 😀 *big hugs*

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Jun 26 2013 9:04 pm

Yes, will have to speed my search for a more willing and attentive partner. Have several admirers but have been playing it cool. Need to change strategy 🙂

      • Sonel / Jun 26 2013 9:33 pm

Oh, I love the ‘playing it cool’ part. Yes, a girl must not seem too willingly otherwise they start taking you for granted and think they are “hunks”. Good luck on the strategy change. I am sure you will have them on a leash soon! 😉

      • rubytheblacklabrador / Jun 26 2013 9:35 pm

        Thanks will report back!

      • Sonel / Jun 26 2013 9:46 pm

        Oh, please do! 😀 *hugs*

The dead bat may do the trick…lol.

Wow, testosterone reducing injections? I never knew there was such a thing!!! I need to get some for a particular guy at work who shares Dougal’s tendencies. Ha! Thanks for this story of your adventure Ruby. (P.S I don’t think you need to win him back. You’re beautiful enough without Dougal’s advances!) xx

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Jun 28 2013 11:51 am

Maybe you rub yourself in bat to repel any advances – I hear humans don’t actually like the smell 🙂

Dogs get testosterone lowering shots? Now that’s an idea…..

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Jul 1 2013 9:24 am

Yes – I’ve put the actual name of it on the blog post now I’ve found out more from the owner 🙂
