Full of possum

Ruby full belly

Been waiting two weeks for a possum under a tree to fully decompose to its smelliest. Have nonchalantly sniffed it, left it and ignored it. Today I pounced, ran off and ate the entire carcass to the disgust of the whole park. Despite best efforts, no one could catch me. Left a pungent aroma in my wake as I was manhandled home and slept all day emitting foul-smelling gases from both ends…

What a sad face! I hope she doesn’t get sick.

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 28 2013 8:57 pm

Me too – she seems ok though and bowel movements were normal this afternoon. She was just a bit sleepy in this photo:)

Almost makes one stop and wonder why we buy some of the most expensive food on the market for them! :O

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 29 2013 7:32 am

Yes! I’m sure if I left Ruby in the park she could survive on her own for a wek just scavenging:)

A well-hung possum is delicious! Hope it wasn’t the U-possum, because that has torpedos inside. Paws crossed that your stomach can manage such delicacies :o)

Oh ick Ruby, I sure hope you’re OK after eating all that!

  5. littledogslaughed / Oct 28 2013 11:31 pm

What a great photograph! Sweet dreams Ruby-I am sure you will be dreaming of possum pie, possum cake, possum stew, possum rolls . . . .

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 29 2013 7:34 am

Oh yes – although possum sushi is best – nice and raw and well aged…

  6. Linda Trunell / Oct 29 2013 12:24 am

You look a little queazy in your pic, Ruby. Hope you feel okay. I have been steering Max away from a possum carcass on our walk for the past week or so. He seems to think it is ripe for eating, too!

Hehehehe sounds like it was worth it:-)

Ruby, you are such a funny girl — I love the gorgeous picture of your sad face today and the account of how your possum posse went — good strategy to leave it alone until it REALLY STANK! Hey, where do you live, Ruby? I sure don’t think we have any possums around for us to get into (on Vancouver Island, BC). From Cindy and Midge

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 29 2013 7:36 am

Hi Cindy and Midge I live in Sydney, Australia – fairly close to the centre and near a huge park where there is an adbundance of rats, bats, birds and possums. I only eat them when they’re dead and well aged though. Nice to meet you:)

    Oh Ruby!

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 29 2013 7:36 am

I know, I know – well I patiently waited til it was nice and aged and fooled everyone. Such a treat!

  10. mollieandclaire / Oct 29 2013 3:26 am

In awe of your exploits – love from Mollie xxx

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 29 2013 7:37 am

Thanks – two days in a row there was really something to write about. Will me nice to mum for the next couple of days and lull her in to a false sense of security:)

πŸ˜† πŸ˜† Thank you for sharing this experience. Love your writing!!!

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 29 2013 7:39 am

Thank you – it was another day in the life of Ruby – a life full of great highs and lows!

  12. barb19 / Oct 29 2013 7:22 am

I guess that’s what dogs do . . . hope she doesn’t get sick though.

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 29 2013 7:40 am

Yes – well I think some dogs. Most of my friends dogs don’t seem interested at all in dead animals. Ruby will eat anything and everything. She seems ok today and we had a fun walk today:)

      • barb19 / Oct 29 2013 8:21 am

Labradors have a reputation for eating anything and everything!

      • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 29 2013 9:32 am

        Such a bad reputation!

  13. readingwithrhythm / Oct 29 2013 9:20 am

    What JOY!

  14. / Oct 29 2013 4:12 pm

Possum gas is probably the worst. I’m glad you enjoyed your find, Ruby but condolences to your family!

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 29 2013 7:25 pm

Yes – they didn’t like it at all – a one point during dinner I was banished to the garden:(

  15. Sonel / Oct 29 2013 5:41 pm

What an adorable face! Great shot Charlie and seems Ruby had lots of fun..heheheheh. πŸ˜€ *big hugs*

    • rubytheblacklabrador / Oct 29 2013 7:26 pm

Fun as always and water off a duck’s back so to speak. She never ever seems to have any ill effects from her snaffling.

  16. 2browndawgs / Oct 30 2013 12:10 pm

    Oh boy!

  17. weliveinaflat / Oct 30 2013 6:56 pm

    ewwww smelly smelly!!

  18. thecompletebook / Oct 31 2013 9:34 pm

You and two of my cats would get on very well! We don’t get possums here but they sure do make short work of rabbits, rats, mice and birds. Oh yes, I nearly forgot about the moles (which for some reason they usually don’t finish) as well as bats!

Little moles – I’d forgotten about moles. We have pygmy possums here which are about the same size. Dead food is just yummy:)

  19. Cookie the Beagle / Nov 2 2013 10:24 am

Hahaha way to go! Dead possum….sounds like a delicious treat πŸ™‚

I don’t care what you smell like or where your nose has been. This is an awesome close-up!
